Music has always been a passion of mine. My love of music, and particularly the blues, began long ago with the rise of B.B.King, Jimi Hendrix, Johnny Winter, and the Paul Butterfield Blues Band. I even attempted to become a musician myself. I bought a harmonica and got as far as learning how to play Jingle Bells, but it was so bad it knocked Santa off the roof.
I decided to follow my love of music into a radio career. How could it get any better! Play music and get paid. I began at CJRN Radio in Niagara Falls, but as so often happens, fate took a turn and I landed a job at CHCH TV.
While there, I was thrilled to watch the taping of the tv show, IN SESSION, featuring jams with B.B. King and Larry Carlton, Johnny Winter and Dr. John, Stevie Rae Vaughan and Albert King. I sat on the concrete studio floor, enthralled by what I was seeing and hearing.
I then landed at Mohawk College as a teacher, and now I’m Associate Dean of Media and Entertainment. This portfolio included the FM radio station, now called the Hawk. I decided to jump in and join the fun by hosting Blues Blast.
My love of the blues has prompted me to promote Canadian blues artists. My greatest joy comes from promoting home-grown Canadian music that deserves a listening audience.. I’ve met many of the artists and they are down-to earth folks who just want to get their music out there. I truly believe the blues are alive and thriving– especially in Canada.
